Opus 51092 Fortress Bird Shelter Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder Review

Opus 51092 Fortress Bird Shelter Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder

This bird feeder looked liked the solution to our problem with the squirrels, unfortunatley it is also the solution to the birds we have had the feeder up for a month, and the birds cannot figure out how to enter it, they stand on it, sit on the pole it is hanging on, but cannot get into it. Very disappointed, but it does keep the squirels off.

I have two of this model and one of the old model with the plastic bottom that catches the seed. All three are the very best. They are definitely squirrel proof (but not raccoon proof!). We live in a natural setting so the bird seed dropping to the ground is not a problem. I've had the old model for at least 7 years and this SDC model for at least three. They not only last, but are easy to fill and clean.

Perky-Pet HF92 Gazebo Wild Bird Feeder Review

Perky-Pet HF92 Gazebo Wild Bird Feeder
Average Reviews:

I am giving this feeder 4/5 stars because its only flaw is the wire that runs throughout the unit. It is not secure enough to hold the weight of the seed. But, once I added some twine and formed a loop over the branch, there has been no problem. Despite that, I would still highly recommend this feeder. The construction is sturdy, and now the birds are lining up to use it. I usually have 2 birds on there at any given time. Often there are 4 birds using it, 1 standing on top of it, and 3-4 under it picking up the leftovers. I also like its simple, but attractive appearance. A good product.

Heritage Farms Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder Review

Heritage Farms Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had an old Heritage Farms Absolute Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder for years and I loved it...the old style one before they started adding the plastic windows to see the food level. Something knocked it down twice, and the second time it was not repairable. (My local birdseed store things it was a racoon or possum.) Still, it had lasted a long time, so I went to get another one. When I saw this cute little red one, I liked it and emailed the company with some questions about the sturdiness of it. The replies were lackadasical and unable to answer my questions...it seems they don't manufacture this one (and the customer service person was not interested in finding out the answers to my questions.)
Still, I had had a good experience with their other feeder, and I liked their style of feeder from the research I had done, and I decided to order it.
What I don't like about it:
1. Lid (top of the house) stayed closed by gravity...no closure like my old Absolute. It would be easy for a squirrel (raccon, possum) to open, I'd think.
2. Paint has already faded.
3. Cardinals do NOT eat at it, and they were my best customers at the Absolute. I suspect it is because the distance from perch to the eating well is too short, and they do not like to eat sideways. The (smaller) wrens are now my best customers, and the cardinals sit on nearby branches and look forlorn. Or maybe frustrated, I'm not sure.
4. Counterweight mechanism (exposed metal coiled springs) has already popped once on one side. Easy to put back, but not a quality design.
5. The nut/bolts that attach the perch to the feeder can come loose. I discovered that when I looked out and saw a perch hanging. One nut had come loose and fallen out onto the ground somewhere. Easy to replace, but again, poor design. Should have at least included some of those washers that tighten it down better so this doesn't happen.
6. The item was shipped loose in an Amazon box, and was slipping around in the box. I think it would have been better packed in its own box.
These things, combined with the lack of customer service in their Customer Service leads me to suggest that not only do you buy a different feeder, but don't get one from Heritage Farms.

Wild Bill's 8 Station Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder Review

Wild Bill's 8 Station Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder
Average Reviews:

The first day we put it up, squirrels learned to fear it. Since that time a year ago, we haven't seen a single squirrel try to get birdseed. Even when we leave the power switch off, no squirrels. Other "squirrel-proof" feeders we tried didn't work nearly as well, and usually got chewed up by our frustrated little rodent friends.
As a bonus, the feeder is the simplest we've found for filling and cleaning. It holds 10 pounds of birdseed.
Once, I inadvertently shocked myself 'cause I forgot to turn the power switch off. Just as they claim, it's a very mild static-electricity type shock which startles rather than harms.

Duncraft 171 Squirrel Proof Selective Feeder Review

This type of feeder is a death trap to small birds!
We put a similar feeder [with squirrel-proof caging] up in our yard, hoping to deter the squirrels, and it did.
Sadly, we lost 3 sparrows in the process. So many little birds clammered into the feeder, that when something spooked them, and they all tried to get out at once, 3 of them broke there necks in the mad rush. That is NOT acceptable!
We immediately took it down and trashed it.
I'd rather put up with the squirrels than lose even ONE bird!
This type of feeder should be OUTLAWED!

This Duncraft Squirrel Proof Selective wild bird feeder holds about 1-1/2 lbs of mixed seed. 10" diameter wire fenced area keeps out larger birds and squirrels. 15-1/2" tallwith 6 feeding stations. The wire base on this feeder allows discarded seed to fall to the ground, keeping squirrels off the feeder, and attracting more ground-feeding birds.

Aspects 367 Hummzinger Ultra Hummingbird Feeder, 12-Ounce Review

Aspects 367 Hummzinger Ultra Hummingbird Feeder, 12-Ounce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great feeder no doubt. It is the easiest to clean and refill that I've seen. And the bright red makes the hummers go crazy. Mine have become more territorial, and they feed more often now.
Initially I had some concerns that the feeder would need to be almost completely full in order for the hummers to be able to extract any nectar (the feeder is rather deep). Turns out the little guys have pretty long tongues, so they can reach far into the feeder, even when it is close to being empty.
Can't beat the lifetime guarantee.
My only gripe is that small ants can still get inside even with the nectar guard tips in place. In my case, the ants are pretty bad, even more so than with my last feeder which had basically no protection at all.

I purchased this for my mom to watch the birds from her window. It was easy to attach to her window and easy to fill. When she checked to see why not a single bird was visiting --she noticed water (rain) entered into the feeding holes and froze the seed solid! She emptied it and tried again and it happened again. Maybe it would work in a covered area, but not in an area exposed to wet conditions.

Garden Song® 112-4 Select-A-Bird Tube Feeder with Metal Finish

The adjustable perches which are suppose to allow you to allow larger birds to feed or distract them, does not work at all. There seems to be notches that allow different settings, but as birds start to clammer over feeding, the perches retract back and do not allow any bird, except those that can hover to feed. I've utilized a rubberband to keep the perches opened....anyway, my 2cents for you. Good luck...

The roof leaked during a light rain and all the seed was ruined. The design seems guaranteed to leak. I sealed mine with acquarium sealer, but I don't know if that will work. Gray squirrels can't get in, but red squirrels sure can, so it is only squirrel-proof if grays are the only ones in your yard. It is very heavy and needs serious support to hold it up.

Duncraft 18834 Squirrel Proof Blocker Selective Review

Duncraft 18834 Squirrel Proof Blocker Selective
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been through a few feeders looking for something simple that beats the squirrels. This one fits the bill. Its all metal construction prevents chewing, and the distance between the inner wire mesh feed tube and outer cage is sized to allow the birds to reach the seeds with ease. The squirrels can't get at them. It has attracted woodpeckers, nuthatches, titmice and cardinals (which eat seeds that spill on the ground below it). It has a simple locking tab on top that seals the lid but allows for easy refilling.
I just wish it was made in the USA instead of China, like so many other things. I'd happily pay more for that.

Birdscapes® 50173 Paul Revere Feeder, 2.5 lb capacity Review

Birdscapes® 50173 Paul Revere Feeder, 2.5 lb capacity
Average Reviews:

I was so excited when this bird feeder arrived. It really adds elegance to my backyard. It's the prettiest feeder I've ever seen and it's quality made at such a reasonable price. My big issue with it is that it's not squirrel proof. I didn't expect the squirrels around my area to be so greedy. They've been able to shimmy up the hanging pole, cling onto the sides of the feeder by wrapping their body around it, and steal all the seeds from the birds. I'm not sure what to do? I wish the design had been squirrel proof. The squirrels have even bit through some of the wood to get at the food. I'm disappointed for now :( and just took it down this morning until I have a better plan. I guess I have to buy an extra component to deter the squirrels. I would have given it 5 stars otherwise.

When I purchased this I figured it would be so so quality since it was very reasonably priced. I received it in days and much to my surprise, it was a beautiful sturdy bird feeder. And the art work "flowers" on it is just gorgeous! So glad I found it and will definitely order more to give as gifts.

Perky-Pet 203CP Pinch Waist Glass 8-Ounce Hummingbird Feeder Review

Perky-Pet 203CP Pinch Waist Glass 8-Ounce Hummingbird Feeder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The fact that this is one of the most popular hummingbird feeders on the market is mostly due to its wide availability, cheap price, and gaudy styling rather than its quality. I used these feeders for years before discovering better designs, and I came to hate them. The first thing I noticed was that they're hard to clean, with too many small parts and hard-to-reach tubes and crevices. It takes way too long to take the feeder apart, get all the parts clean, and reassemble it.
The next thing that became apparent is that the "bee guards" really don't do a very good job. Honeybees and wasps can't reach the solution through intact guards, but some long-tongued bumblebees can, and tiny bees just crawl right through the guards (and often right into the bottle!). They're also bright yellow, the same color as many bee-pollinated flowers (what was the manufacturer thinking?). The insects really swarm around when the solution oozes out, as it's prone to do on warm days (particularly if you refill the bottle with refrigerated solution).
It didn't take long to discover that this feeder is also not very durable. The plastic parts don't hold up to exposure to sunlight, becoming brittle and loose over time (more quickly in sunny or high-elevation areas, where intense UV light seems to deteriorate the plastic more quickly). The hardened glass bottle is actually the most durable part of this feeder, while the bee guards are the first parts to break down. The size is okay, though if you've only got one or two hummingbirds visiting you won't want to fill the feeder completely.
The best hummingbird feeders cost about twice as much as this model, but they will last at least 10 times as long. The feeders I use most now are the Hummzingers from Aspects and the Droll Yankees LF, both saucer-style feeders. For high-traffic times such as late summer, I switch to the Nature's Best bottle feeder. I never use anything in my feeders except the solution recommended by all hummingbird experts: sugar water made from 3 to 5 parts water to 1 part white table sugar (do not add food coloring!). This is much more economical and probably also healthier (and tastier) for the birds than overpriced chemical-laced commercial mixes such as Perky Pet's "Instant Nectar." The solution should be changed every 2 to 4 days and the feeder cleaned thoroughly at least once a week, no matter what kind of hummingbird feeder you use.

Installation was a breeze. I cleaned the window well, then stuck on the suction cups.
It didn't take the birds long to find it. We've had Chickadees, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Titmouse, and more.
We have a cat that often sits in that windowsill and it doesn't deter the birds from eating. (Don't worry, the window is always closed, and he can't get to the birds.)

Perky Pet 309 Seed Barn Feeder, 5 lb capacity Review

Perky Pet 309 Seed Barn Feeder, 5 lb capacity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this feeder through the winter of 2009-2010. Stellar's Jays, Nuthatches, Juncos and Flickers all seem to be able to feed at it with no problems (though the Juncos prefer feeding on the fallen seeds under it). The feeder has withstood heavy rain, snowfall, severe freezes, and winds up to 65 mph without any issues. The suspension cable is very strong, though I'd recommend if you hang it instead of pole mounting, that you use 2 points of suspension, otherwise there is a tendency for the feeder to tip a little towards one of the ends. The clear plastic sides (all 4) do make it easy to see when it's running low on food at a long distance, and the lift-up cap is adequate for filling in place. It's also easy to clean. I have Abert's Squirrels in the area, and after lots of attempts to get to the food, they finally settled on jumping on it from above to knock a few seeds to the ground. It's not squirrel-proof, but it's not squirrel friendly either, which is a good thing when you are trying to feed the birds.
So why 4 stars instead of 5 (besides the slight tipping problem)? I had to go away for a while and when I came back, the birds had chewed off one of the perches, damaged the other, and tore the edges off the roof looking for seed. While this problem is not unique to this feeder, I think the perches are a bit flimsy and could be made of stronger plastic. That said, it's a good value for the money, and if you don't want to pay more for a wooden feeder like Perky Pet 50153 The Lodge Cedar Feeder, 8 lb capacity or a metal feeder like Heritage Farms Seeds n More Metal Hopper Bird Feeder, I'd go for this one - good for millet, sunflower seeds, and most mixes. Just be sure not to run out of seed so the birds don't have a reason to chew it up!
