(More customer reviews)This is a great feeder. I had it up for 3 weeks, no squirrels. Plenty of Cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, etc. However, today I saw a squirrel clinging to the holes and sides of the feeder.
The feeder is suspended buy very thin 30 lb. monofilament fishing line from a very high branch; feeder is about 7 feet from ground. Would be difficult for a squirrel to slide down the fishing line - but possible, I suppose.
Edit - now I know he leaped up from the nearby giant Rhododendron. I moved the Whipper away from the Rhody - but too close to the trunk of the tree - about 5 feet. Witnessed many squirrels leaping from trunk of tree onto Whipper. They grab onto the birdseed holes.
I moved the Whipper - now it is at least 6 feet off the ground, but over the lawn - will need to move it again.
I liked having the feeder over the Rhody - empty sunflower shells fall onto the ground under the Rhody, out of sight. Rhody gives the birds plenty of cover - they perch in the Rhody before darting over to the feeder, then dart back. A good thing as I saw a hawk peering down yesterday from a tree in the next yard.

(More customer reviews)I bought this on a whim, and I assumed that the picture on the box, showing clusters of goldfinches, was an exaggeration. It isn't. It's an understatement. Right now there are more than a dozen goldfinches scrambling around on my feeder. At times there are probably two dozen. If you have finches in the area, they will find the feeder. But I am a victim of my own success. The socks that come with this feeder spill out enormous quantities of seed. Not only is it expensive, it also makes a real mess on our deck, which I have to clean up constantly. As a result, I'm going to get a tube finch feeder and try it instead. I will miss seeing the crowds of finches clustering literally side by side, but the mess is just too much.
I wanted a feeder right outside my kitchen window. If you can put this feeder somewhere where you don't care about large amounts of spilled seed, and you can afford the seed, then you will love this feeder.
One minor quibble, you will see that a plastic dome attaches to a green ring, and the green ring attaches to the main body of the feeder. Both of these parts come loose far too easily when you fill the feeder, which can mean you spill huge amounts of seed. The trick, I have found, is to hang the feeder from a very low hook when filling it, so that the top of the feeder is about chest level. Then you can fill it easily, without the thing coming apart, and then put it back on its normal hook. I got a big S-shaped thing, from which you can hang other things. At filling time, I take the feeder down, put up the S-hook, then hang the feeder from the S-hook.

Heath Outdoor Products Filled Thistle Sock Review

(More customer reviews)I was unable to find a product like this in my area, so I was very pleased to find this on Amazon (with Prime Membership free shipping!) It didn't last as long as I'd hoped as small sparrows seemed to like the thistle as much as the few finches that came. The sock is reusable, however, and I found I can buy thistle in bulk at my local pet store.

Solar Crackle Ball Bird Feeder Review

(More customer reviews)This is the third solar crackle ball bird feeder that I have purchased - the other 2 were purchased a couple of years ago and the style has changed slightly. Instead of 4 small exposed lights in the top, the lights are enclosed in tubes that run down each corner. I think that this change will protect the lights. One of the older models has had a light damaged by the birds or squirrels. These feeders hold up very well and the older feeders stay lit for a long time each evening. I have never had to recharge or change the batteries.
