Locking Chain, 18" Review

Locking Chain, 18
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This bird feeder chain was exactly what I was looking for. It wraps around any size limb and twirls easily to minimize bird seed spilling from the feeder. Some seed always falls out, but the fact that it rotates with the wind, or a push from an animal definately helps to minimize the situation. I would recomend buying this chain and hanging your bird feeder properly. Fully adjustable too!

Large Hopper Feeder Hgrn Review

Large Hopper Feeder Hgrn
Average Reviews:

This is a great bird feeder. It is fast and simple to fill. After about 5 years of use the cable that it hangs from broke. I replaced it with a much thicker cable and have had no further issues. I also made my cable a bit longer this gets the roof farther out of the way when filling making it easier to fill. I wish I would have gotten the larger size though as I've got enough birds to clean this thing out in a day now.

Coveside Woodpecker Suet Feeder Review

Coveside Woodpecker Suet Feeder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Took about a week for the birds to use this feeder, but now the woodpeckers and other birds use it every day. The best part is that my relentless squirrells cannot get to it because the openings are smaller than regular suet feeders. The woodpeckers rest their tails on the wooden tail rest so it works exactly as described.

Droll Yankees B-72 Executive Feeder 30" Review

Droll Yankees B-72 Executive Feeder 30
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have tons of birds (and squirrels) at our rural home, so bird feeders get a real workout. Any defects show up quickly, and we've gone through a bunch of bird feeders over the years. We love the 30" Droll Yankee feeder. It's very well made, holds 4 pounds of feed, and the birds took to it (all 12 perches) almost instantly.
We're also very pleased with the smaller 1# version we have owned for years, but it's usually empty by noon. This one will last all day and then some, even in the busy spring feeding season. Highly recommended.

Birdscapes® 384 Festival Feeder, 1.8 capacity Review

Birdscapes® 384 Festival Feeder, 1.8 capacity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had two of these feeders in copper, and neither of them lasted for more than a year! The fault is in the construction of the metal feeding/perching plate. It is simply bolted into the plastic tube, which is too weak to withstand the weight of the plate. So after being knocked down a time or two, whether by wind or the occasional squirrel, the plastic cracks under pressure and the entire bottom of the feeder breaks off with no way to be repaired.

Duncraft 188G Metal Selective Feeder with Metal Seed Tray Review

Duncraft 188G Metal Selective Feeder with Metal Seed Tray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This morning I saw a red-tailed hawk swoop up and grab one of the little pine siskins in this cage feeder, right through the bars. I had thought the birds were safe in this feeder, but it turned out to be not quite true. The hawk had trouble pulling his foot back out of the cage with the pine siskin trapped in his claws, but he finally managed it.
Even though Duncraft makes some great bird feeders, there are three reasons why I would not buy this model again:
--red squirrels can squeeze through the bars and get at the seed
--the cage bottom is very difficult to clean. The discarded husks, seeds, and bird droppings create a formidable cement, even after just one day (as I said, the small birds really like this feeder)
--hawks can reach through the bars and extract the smaller birds

Heritage Farms "The Absolute" Bird Feeder #7527 Review

Heritage Farms The Absolute Bird Feeder #7527
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have 2 of these model #7527 for over 6 years. They are sturdy and well made. The design of the roof, balance beam, shutter and roof locking system are simple and well made. I can set the "balance beam" to whatever size birds(s)I want to feed. I have eliminated starlings and other unwanted birds at these feeders by adjusting the weight on the balance beam. Squirrels have never been able to access the seed and each spring a new crop of squirrels go through every possible method to get at the seed, and fail. The "trick" to limiting access is to resist the temptation to set the weight on the beam too heavy so that squirrels can hold the shutter open and clean out the seed. I have had to replace the rod on which the birds sit one time when a squirrel figured out that it could chew through the rod and then do some entertaining acrobatics to cling to the feeder and scoop out seed.

Birds Choice 1 Quart Stainless Steel Nyjer Bird Feeder Review

Birds Choice 1 Quart Stainless Steel Nyjer Bird Feeder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
FYI; I have reviewed & purchased other Bird's Choice feeders (you can read them here on Amazon). I have bought many different kids of feeders from many companies, and I always go back to the Bird's Choice feeders. They are more expensive and well worth it.
I have three of their stainless-steel tube feeders: The shelled peanut & nugget feeder [green enamel], the peanut in-the-shell feeder [red enamel] and this one, the Nyjer feeder [yellow enamel].
These three feeders are very similar in construction and I have had success with all of them. They are strong, simple to use, easy to clean, and you get the birds you want with them. The design of the tubes keeps the feed much dryer & circulating than any other tubes I have used, even after rain storms.
I get woodpeckers, blue jays, nuthatch, sparrows (of course) red-winged black birds, titmouse and chickadees on the whole and the shelled peanut feeders. I get grackles and starlings on them too, but since these undesirable birds are mostly opportunists, they get tired of having to peck out their food and leave quickly.
I get sparrows and finches on the Nyjer feeder. By the way, do not bemoan sparrows eating your feed. They are not nearly as irritating like the grackles and starlings, it is challenging to try and tell the many varieties of them apart, and the flurry of activity they provide around the feeders will attract the ones you want to see.
I do not use the trays (a separate purchase usually), obviously because of the squirrels (those pretty little rats are SMART), but also because it invites the non-clingers that devour obnoxiously - like Mourning Doves, Grackles and Starlings. Mourning Doves are not afraid of high feeders, as long as they have room to purchase they will sit and eat like it's a Roman trough on a Friday night.
I have modified all three of these tubes the same way, with simple things to stop the squirrels from getting in, and it has worked beautifully:
I use electrical tape on the bottom, wrapped tight to secure the point where the bottom attaches to the tube. I started doing this because I witnessed a squirrel as he or she clung to the body of the tube, popped off the metal clip holding the bottom in place, and then pushed the bottom off with his back legs. The seed spilled out to the ground en masse. To top it off, it was the nyjer seed, so after dumping all of it, he then proceeded to not even eat it. The pretty little RAT.
This is not a negative comment to Bird's Choice at all. Squirrels are smart, innovative and way stronger than most people realize. You have to be willing to experiment to out-do them. In the end, it can be very entertaining when you best them.
I go right over the metal clip holding the bottom to the tube together with the electrical tape, winding it about 5 times to cover about an inch where the two parts meet. I change it every time I clean it, and the squirrel can't seem to defeat it.
The other modification is to the tops, where I use stainless steel beaded chains - light pulls I think they are called? - that I weave through the holes in the tubes and around the top hanger to secure it. They have just enough slack that I can get them undone when I re-fill, but not enough slack that the rats with pretty tails cannot get the lid off to feed, or even to stick an arm in. Poor babies.
These are cheap modifications that hold up in the elements, and they work.
In all, I love these tube feeders and I highly recommend all three of them.

Bird Feeder, Arundale Sky Cafe Birdfeeder Review

Bird Feeder, Arundale Sky Cafe Birdfeeder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have tried hanging this thing at different lengths and squirrels aren't thrown off. They sit in the tray and eat away. I have it hanging from a shepherd's hook- squirrels either climb the pole and reach for the tray (even if the chain is long like the instructions say) or they climb the fence that is 3 to 4 feet away and jump to it. I really like how much seed this thing holds. If I didn't chase off 13 squirrels or so at a time I would leave it outside. Instead I went to a local store and bought a feeder where the weight of the squirrel pulls a shield over the opening for food. I only saw one squirrel that was smart enough to figure out how to use it's feet and hands to get upside down so he or she didn't close the food opening. If I had more money to spend I would buy the squirrel guard that goes with the Sky Cafe and the optional pole that goes under the feeder as a stand instead of hanging the feeder. For the price of this thing alone I am sorry I bought it. I don't even use it.

The feeder arrived damaged. I ended up paying for shipping it back. The replacement they sent me was missing a part. The missing part they sent me was for the wrong feeder. I gave up and am stuck with semi-useless product. Making matters worse, he return policy at DEERSO is very restrictive. Finally, as a final insult, the product I ordered was not the one sent. The unit pictured is red. We were shipped green.

Duncraft 18814 Squirrel Proof Accent Selective Feeder Review

Duncraft 18814 Squirrel Proof Accent Selective Feeder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the best squirrel proof type of bird feeder there is - as far as I have been able to determine in several decades of trying to find such an article. I have owned many other types, including the Hertitage green metal monster weighted-perch feeders. I don't know how stupid your squirrels are, but here they just hang by one foot from the hanger or the perch joint of the Heritage feeders and stick their heads into the slot, holding the feeder open with their fat necks while they gorge themselves. Poles don't stop them. Greased poles don't stop them. Silicone spray and WD-40 don't stop them. They just keep working at it until they wear the stuff out.
This style of feeder, where the feeder itself is inside a substantial baffle, is the closest thing to squirrel proof I have found. I own several in different sizes. To successfully deter squirrels, look for these features: The baffle should be far enough from the tube or feeder that a squirrel absolutely cannot reach the feeder within. Ideally there should NOT be a tray on the bottom of the feeder. Spilled seed should be able to fall through to the ground for the ground feeding birds. If there is a tray, squirrels will just keep coming back for the seed they can reach near the edge, and so they will hang on the feeders preventing birds from coming.
Lately my squirrels have figured out how to chew the top of the plastic feed tube that extends above the baffle, just under the metal cap, until they open up the entire top of the feeder. If the manufacturers would fit a metal ring around the top of the feed tube, they could make this feeder even more squirrel-"proof".
Anyone who succeeds in devising a truly squirrel proof platform or perch type feeder should be awarded some kind of Nobel Prize!

Varicraft Avian Mixed Seed Feeder (Model AV-1MNP) Review

Varicraft Avian Mixed Seed Feeder (Model AV-1MNP)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For years I've been trying to find a raccoon-proof high capacity bird feeder. There are many squirrel-proof ones, but this is the *only* raccoon proof one in existence as far as I can tell. Raccoons have destroyed many plastic ones that I've tried, so I learned that any feeder must be all metal. Second, no matter how big of a baffle I put on my wire a raccoon will still get past it, so the metal feeder must also have a metal cage. This feeder is indestructable and raccoons can't get into it, plus, it holds several weeks worth of seed, so it's great!

The bird feeder is very attractive and solid. It's my fault that I have a poor sense of proportion and size.
You'll have to fill the feeder every day.
For reasons that are my own problem, I pictured it being bigger and holding more.
The design on the bottom is what I especially like because the seed falls instead of becoming all rancid in a tray
or bottom lip.

Avian Series Mixed Bird Feeder, Green Review

Avian Series Mixed Bird Feeder, Green
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had seed in this feeder for over 5 weeks now and have not had to refill it. I use a mix of de-shelled seed and I get lots of little birds all day long using the feeder. I have not had any birds stop coming to the feeder since switching to this one with a cage!!!! The larger birds simply eat what falls to the ground. The list of birds I get eating from the feeder include: gold finches, sparrows (yuk), juncos, titmouses, chickadees, red-headed woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers, nuthatches, & house finches. Eating from what falls to the ground I get: blue jays, mockingbirds, grackles, cardinals, & robins. A must have for backyard bird enthusiasts who hate having to always put food in the feeder.

Droll Yankees Yankee Whipper Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder, Model# YCPD90 Review

Droll Yankees Yankee Whipper Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder, Model# YCPD90
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great feeder. I had it up for 3 weeks, no squirrels. Plenty of Cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, etc. However, today I saw a squirrel clinging to the holes and sides of the feeder.
The feeder is suspended buy very thin 30 lb. monofilament fishing line from a very high branch; feeder is about 7 feet from ground. Would be difficult for a squirrel to slide down the fishing line - but possible, I suppose.
Edit - now I know he leaped up from the nearby giant Rhododendron. I moved the Whipper away from the Rhody - but too close to the trunk of the tree - about 5 feet. Witnessed many squirrels leaping from trunk of tree onto Whipper. They grab onto the birdseed holes.
I moved the Whipper - now it is at least 6 feet off the ground, but over the lawn - will need to move it again.
I liked having the feeder over the Rhody - empty sunflower shells fall onto the ground under the Rhody, out of sight. Rhody gives the birds plenty of cover - they perch in the Rhody before darting over to the feeder, then dart back. A good thing as I saw a hawk peering down yesterday from a tree in the next yard.
