(More customer reviews)I looked at several bat houses before buying this one. I chose this particular bat house because it is made to the Organization For Bat Conservation Specifications. Some of the other bat houses that I looked at online did not indicate that they were built according to the same standards. For instance, most did not indicate if they were properly caulked or even constructed with screws rather than nails.
To be upfront, I was initially going to buy a bat house from the Organization for Bat Conservation itself. (The organization was recommended to me by an article in a national gardening magazine on attracting bats to your garden to control insects). However, the organization's bat houses and bat house kits are sold as fund raisers, so they cost a bit more than I was hoping to pay. I looked up their specifications for building bat houses, but decided that it would be easier for me to find something on amazon.com that fit the specifications rather than build my own.
This company was the only one I found that clearly stated whether they followed the organization's recommendations. Some of the other boxes were built to other standards, such as to Audubon Society Standards, which would probably be OK too. However, most of the other vendors listed how easy it would be to attract bats with their boxes without giving an ounce of information on how well their products were constructed. Unfortunately, the reviews for the other boxes did not give much information on construction either. This one met the construction standards that I was looking for, had more than one chamber, and was reasonably priced for the quality.
The bat house arrived on time and well-packed. It also came with some literature on whether or not the bat house ought to be painted/stained - and if so, what color. Again, this is consistent with what I found through the Bat Conservation website (www.batcon.org). The same literature included information on hanging, maintenance, and how long it may take before the bats move in. Overall, I am satisfied and would recommend the product to others. However, be aware that it does not come with a pole and it comes unstained/unpainted. (Granted, this appears to be consistent with all of the other bat houses available online, so I don't view it as a problem).

Window Alert Maple Leaf Decal Review

(More customer reviews)A lot of sources say that UV reflective decals on windows are not effective at preventing bird impacts, but we've had these exact maple leaf decals on our giant bird-killing window at our house for a couple years and have had very few impacts since. They may not be as good as more intense methods, but they are relatively cheap and seem to give them a heads up. :) I give them 5 stars because of the noticeable drop in impacts that we've experienced.

HOMESTEAD STEP-IN-POLE Review

(More customer reviews)This pole is hard to assemble. The pieces don't fit together very well. You have to use a rubber mallet and have some patience. However, once the thing was put together, you just jab it into the ground. I would reccommend a wooden bird feeder for easiest installation. Just put in a couple of wood screws and you're done.

Twirl-a-Squirrel Baffle, Green Review

(More customer reviews)I picked up one of these to try to keep my bird seed being eaten by the birds in my backyard instead of the greedy squirrels. (There is a squirrel feeder in the yard as well, but the squirrels still climb up and go for the more expensive bird seed.)
I give it 3 stars because it is a bit more finicky than I would have hoped for. According to the instructions that come with it:
1) Works on feeders up to 8 pounds - not 10 as described above in the description. My feeder is on the edge.
2) You can't hang it from a rope of anything else not rigid. My feeder hangs from a long chain and already has a rain guard over it. Due to weight if I put the Twirl-a-Squirrel above that chain and guard then I exceed the weight limit and the instructions say I can't hang it off the end of the chain so it is kind of limiting.
3) It triggers when it detects 1 pound of weight. Unfortunately this is sensistive enough to go off just from birds using the feeder. It is not uncommon for there to be 10+ birds on the feeder and sometimes another will land "hard" on the bottom of the feeder and start the twirling.
4) Instructions say to take it down when windy. I haven't had it long enough to know how sensitive it is going to be to wind yet but this does concern me as it is often windy in my backyard.
5) If your feeder has a screwed in hook on top of it then the twirl-a-squirrel can unscrew it from the feeder when it rotates. Not a problem for me but could be for others.
On the plus side it does a great job of chasing away the squirrels so far and the birds have been persistent with dealing with the false alarms that send them flying away.
I hope this has been helpful to others who are considering giving this a try. I give it a thumbs up overall and recommend it.

(More customer reviews)I bought the standard "high energy suet" from my grocery store and it was pretty much ignored by the birds except for occassional starlings, which I wasn't looking to attract. I replaced it with this "woodpecker treat" and now we have several woodpeckers who feed from it daily. Although woodpeckers are common where I live, we never saw them hanging out in our yard before. However, it is also attracting grey squirrels, which the plain blend didn't, and I think they're eating a lot more of it than the birds. Even so, a cake lasts more than a week, so I planning to stick with this variety for a while.

(More customer reviews)This is by far the best birdfeeder I've ever owned or heard of. I have had one for years, and it is still going strong. Its ingenious design makes it completely weatherproof. The parts are threaded one above another on a central shaft making it a cinch to completely disassemble it for cleaning (which I never get around to doing).The seeds can be plucked one by one by the birds through a narrow gap around the body while they stand on the bottom shelf which is shielded from the rain by another wide tent-like plastic dish.
Use only black oil sunflower seed. Regular sunflower seeds are too big to go through the gap. Most birds like black oil seed best anyway. Because the feeding gap stretches all around the outside of the seed container, many birds can eat at the same time. We have little birds like sparrows and finches at the same time as bigger birds like cardinals and bluejays.
Refilling the huge 6-cup (1-1/2 quart) bin is a cinch: Take feeder off the hook, set it down, unscrew the top hanger, lift off the top disk, and pour, then put the top disk and hanger back. I bought a trash can that holds a 25-pound bag of seed.I buy the seed at the local farm supply store for less than $10, and scoop it into the feeder with a plastic water pitcher which I leave in the trash can.
I know it's a lot of money,but believe me, it's worth every penny.

The panels are glass, not plastic, and the pincone hanging on the bottom of it to ward off chipmunks was the perfect look for my mountain home. I have hung it just outside my kitchen window and anticipate a long cold winter ahead, but the promise of a show from birds outside my window helps me face the snowy season with courage. The instruction booklet inside explains the habits of birds and how to care for them and I am beginning to think maybe this could be the beginning of a new hobby! Betty

Living in Minnesota, a water bowl that would keep water from freezing is essential. In these parts the season known as "Fall" lasts approximately 12 hrs. The timeframe it goes from 78 to a daytime high of 38 the next day, with overnight lows in the 20's and 30's.
We've already had overnight lows (with windchill) in the low 20's and teens so I've had a chance to see how well the bowl would handle a dozen kitties as well as the cold temps.
Works like a charm. One day the water was frozen, I plugged in the bowl and no more frozen water the next day, and the weeks following.
If you have outdoor pets and cold overnight lows, this water bowl is what you need. Didn't seem to up my electric bill either which is nice.
Yes, I would recommend this item. Also, it took 1 week from time of ordering to arrive. I think they shipped the day after the order was processed, the only reason it took that long to arrive, was due to a weekend that fell a few days after I ordered.

(More customer reviews)I ordered 2 of these as a replacement for one I that I had been using for years. The new feeder seems to be sturdier than the old one. I really like Woodlink brand feeders as they are always high quality and well designed.
The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5, the hole in the lid allows the chain and hook to slide completely through the lid when refilling. This is a minor nusance and could be solved with a washer or some type of "Chain-stop". The birds love this sunflower feeder. Finches, woodpeckers and nuthatches all are frequent visitors. I also orderd the thistle feeder that is similar in design. It is the best thistle feeder that I have ever had.

Any defects show up quickly, and we've gone through a bunch of bird feeders over the years. We love the 30" Droll Yankee feeder. It's very well made, holds 4 pounds of feed, and the birds took to it (all 12 perches) almost instantly.
We're also very pleased with the smaller 1# version we have owned for years, but it's usually empty by noon. This one will last all day and then some, even in the busy spring feeding season. Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)This morning I saw a red-tailed hawk swoop up and grab one of the little pine siskins in this cage feeder, right through the bars. I had thought the birds were safe in this feeder, but it turned out to be not quite true. The hawk had trouble pulling his foot back out of the cage with the pine siskin trapped in his claws, but he finally managed it.
Even though Duncraft makes some great bird feeders, there are three reasons why I would not buy this model again:
--red squirrels can squeeze through the bars and get at the seed
--the cage bottom is very difficult to clean. The discarded husks, seeds, and bird droppings create a formidable cement, even after just one day (as I said, the small birds really like this feeder)
--hawks can reach through the bars and extract the smaller birds
