(More customer reviews)After searching through all the butterfly houses on Amazon, I decided to buy this one as a birthday present to myself. It's not the least expensive of the houses sold here, but I believe it's the best value. For under fifty bucks, you get a pretty LARGE butterfly house handcrafted of solid cedar. It is well made, with deck screws. It has a side that opens very easily for cleaning and observing your butterfly activities. The side door is secured with a sturdy brass L hook. The house's slot openings are plentiful (six in front, two on each side), providing excellent ventilation and butterfly access. And best of all, it is made in the good ol' US of A (Wisconsin)... something very hard to find these days, but appreciated immensely by me!
I could have spent 1/5 of the price... but I decided that this would be a good investment. And I was not wrong about that. This is a serious piece of outdoor "furniture" that I believe will last for many years. It is the same material (red cedar, smells great too) as the fence I had installed many years ago, and that is still in fine shape and has a lot of life in it... in spite of turning a silvery gray over time. I suspect that with proper care, this item will age the same way.
Kudos to BirdsChoice, for selling such a fine quality item in a world that seems to be filled with crap. I intend to look into purchasing their Flutterby butterfly feeder as well, now that I know how quality-oriented the company is.

(More customer reviews)This casting is beautifully detailed and looks amazingly like aged, hand-carved wood. Having shopped extensively for this garden feature, I can state absolutely that the value is unbeatable. Things to keep in mind (1)the bowl is not covered so seeds would get wet in an uncovered setting, (2) the bowl bottom has a drain hole to make cleaning/draining easy but no plug. It's easy to temporarily or permanently "plug" the hole using any of a variety of household items. The bowl works well to provide drinking water for birds but only a small bird could take a bath.

Xlarge Buddha Statue Figural Garden Decor Yard Feeder Review

It was dark green and purely plastic looking. Upon writing the seller, here was the response:
"We only have one Buddha statue in stock so you received the correct item. In different lots they items can be darker or lighter. They do have somewhat a greener hue to them. Unfortunately images on a computer can different due to monitor settings. If you do not like the product we are always happy to accept a return and I can provide you with that information if you wish."
Now, a computer can provide a different hue, but when the description says "Granite Finish", and the product delivered is a dark green plastic, there is something wrong in the description. Blaming it on "monitor settings" is no excuse.
This will be returned as soon as possible.

Happy Bird DLXSS Deluxe Wild Bird Solar Sipper Review

(More customer reviews)I researched the Solar Sipper well before buying one and after all the glowing reviews, ordered 4. 2 were for myself and 2 to give as gifts. However, upon receiveing them, I discovered a major problem. The lid is very difficult to remove, and even MORE difficult to put back on, once it has water in it. I certainly would not givethese as gifts if they are this hard to put the lids on. Certainly, anyone with hand problems or diminished strength will have problems for sure.
After fighting with my two Sipper baths several times and spilling a whole bath worth of water on myself more than once, I called the company I had ordered from and discovered their return policy to be so restricitve that I called the manufacturer myself. The manufacturer, Happy Bird Corp., was wonderful and gave me not only some instructions about how to possibly cure the problem, but also said they would refund me the total amount of my purchase, less shipping of course, if I still had issues with it and to just skip the lousy online retailer I bought them from.
So, here is the little trick they told me, though I have yet to try it. They said there is a little burr of plastic around the inside edge of the outer container were the lid snaps in. I am to take a knife and scrap off some of the burred edge and see if that helps. They said others have had this problem too and this has proven to help. I shall see. I'll write an update after giving this a try.
UPDATE: The scrapping trick did help! Will be doing this too all of them, including the ones I plan to give as gifts.

Perky-Pet 221 Hummingbird Oasis Feeder, 16-Ounce Capacity Review

(More customer reviews)My hummers had no trouble switching from the basic bottle feeders to this saucer, and I love it because it's the oh-so-easy to clean. The built in ant moat dries out rather quickly, but I basically fail to fill it anyway, and haven't had any ant problems at all. I now have 2 of these feeders, that hang from shepherds hooks, and there's no leakage problems whatsoever. Remember: change your sugar water frequently; every few days, to avoid spoilage. I highly recommend this feeder.
EDIT (04/2008): I wish this feeder came in 8oz, since I don't really need 16oz, and don't get that many hummers (unfortunately). But, I did also purchase a Hummzinger Fancy (12 oz), and surprisingly I just didn't like it. It was easy to clean, but was deeper than the PPO, which didn't appeal to me. I had put the Perky Pet on one hook on the south side of the house, and the HummZinger on the north side's hook. The HummZinger didn't get much activity, which was surprising since the hummers are used to both hooks having a feeder. After 2 weeks, I put the HummZinger away and went back to 2 PP's. Activity resumed on the north hook...
Considering both feeders are outside from April to November, and rinsed in hot water for every cleaning, they've held up well. No cracking, minimal color fading, no flowers have needed replacement to date.
