When I first looked at the small size of the drinking trough I was very skeptical. However, I decided to give the item a chance and installed one of them. Within a few days my "keets" had figured it out, and the water level began to reflect its regular use. These are now the only water sources for my birds, and they work beautifully. As with any water or food dispenser, I always suggest you use more than one in case something goes wrong (there is a small ball valve, and any water source can get fouled). This is especially true if you are going to go out of town for a couple of days. But, for small birds, I can wholeheartedly recommend these waterers. And it is so convenient to be able to service them from outside the cage - no more spills from maneuvering through the cage door and around perches.
As for the review which was so critical of this item, I am wondering if they gave the birds a chance to discover it? Birds are cautious of new things, and at least in the case of my birds, they don't use anything until it has been around long enough to be considered "safe" by them. The quality of this item is adequate, and quite typical of most plastic bird cage accessories. I would not consider it to be "very cheaply made" - just your average plastic manufacturing in my book.
My one caveat with this item is that I do not believe the trough is adequate for anything other than small birds like "keets" and canaries, but then that is what the product description says too, so no surprise there.
