Mills Brothers Hummingbird Food 3-Ounce Packet, 3-Pack Review

Mills Brothers Hummingbird Food 3-Ounce Packet, 3-Pack

I have beern using this hummingbird food for years. The local hummingbirds seem to love it. I have tried others, but, the local humming birds seem to shun them. Recently I had difficulty locating the MILLS Brothers humming food locally. I found it at Amazon.
I found that by using a Rubbermaid "RefillReuse" 20 oz. plastic bottle, mixing the food with water becomes easy. One side of the bottle is marked with a 10 oz. mark and a 20 oz. mark. Between those two marks is blank mark. That would be the 15 oz. mark.
I empty a bag of hummingbird food into the bottle. Fill the bottle with water until it reaches the mark between the 10 oz. and the 20 oz. marks. Replace the cap making sure the spout is closed and shake. Done. They sell the bottle at Amazon.

Garden Song® 4444-6 Hummingbird Food Concentrate 32 ounces Review

I couldn't figure out how to get this stuff out of the bottle easily. I finally poked a larger hole in it and let it just run out into a measuring cup. After getting it all set up and in the feeder the hummers shunned it in favor of another feeder with only clear necter. Save your money and make your own necter with sugar, its easier!

16 Ounce Mainstays and First Nature 10 Port Hummingbird Feeder Review

Average Reviews:

There's no reason for the yellow snap-on "flowers" except for somewhere for dirt/mold to collect or start. Also when cleaning, it's just one more thing to clean. After leaving them off a feeder, I realized the "hummers" couldn't care less, and there doesn't seem to be any extra attraction to the birds. Good feeder but attachments are not necessary, just more work. Get the plain ones from the same company.

Classic Brands 55 Liquid Nectar, 64-Ounce Review

Classic Brands 55 Liquid Nectar, 64-Ounce
Average Reviews:

Errr...can I say "hmmmm"...hmmmmmmm....and more hmmmm....This stuff will do the job for the little hummingbirds, but if you are thinking as I was, "Hey, pretty red, pretty hummingbirds, and beautiful Orioles can all continue to share same feeder...."
NADA! This stuff ran my Orioles off. I have no clue why, unless the red color scares the Orioles. In fact, I really hate to say this since all these "Natural Type" hummingbird mixtures rant and rave about the "extra benefits" the hummers receive from their solutions...I mean give me the sugar mixture. You know the 3 cups water with 1 cup sugar, give or take some...
But for me...I think I will stay away from "red" from now on. It really did not attract the hummers anymore than clear liquid, nor did it do a thing for all my Orioles except run them off...
But if you are looking for color...sigh...give it a go, but don't be disappointed if you are an Oriole fan and off they go! Truthfully, I don't see that the red dye does a thing for the hummers or hummingbirds or lil' beauts...they gonna' find their beloved foot either way....
Please get rid of the red and give me the clear!
Give me the suga'!

Perky Pet Products 230 8-Ounce Instant Nectar Review

Perky Pet Products 230 8-Ounce Instant Nectar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Red dye has never been scientifically tested for safety as a hummingbird food supplement, and while its health effects on birds are unproven, red dye is suspected by licensed rehabilitators of causing cancer in hummingbirds. Further, in preference tests, hummingbirds consistently choose plain sugar syrup (one part cane sugar to four parts water, nothing else added) over packaged mixes or homemade syrup containing dye, presumably because the dye tastes wrong to them. They also do not like beet sugar.
If hummingbirds seem to prefer this mix over plain sugar water, it's probably because the sugar water has fermented--it must be changed and the feeder cleaned as soon as it starts getting cloudy--and the fresh mix is the lesser of two evils. Many, many people report getting several times more hummingbirds after switching from this mix to plain sugar water.
A 1:4 sugar water syrup is nearly identical to natural flower nectars from plants that hummingbirds use. The contents of Perky-Pet's mix are not listed, since none of the protective government regulations apply to animal food, but analyses of the mix usually show a host of bacteria and other contaminants, presumably from unregulated and unsanitary handling practices. Sugar is cheap--why take a chance on the health of your hummingbirds?
I would rate this product with negative stars if it were possible.

OurPet's Lighthouse Hummingbird Feeder Review

OurPet's Lighthouse Hummingbird Feeder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these in the past before this one and the bottle weakens and cracks into pieces after one season in the sun. The bottle opening screws are of such a size that none of the bottles I have laying around will fit...I did find one but it would not seal well and of course looked like crap. So I bought feeder anther hoping it will last longer. It would be nice if they sold separate bottles for cheap but that isn't going to happen.

Perky-Pet 238 Hummingbird Nectar, 32-Ounce Concentrate Review

Perky-Pet 238 Hummingbird Nectar, 32-Ounce Concentrate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is no reason for the manufacturer to put red food coloring into this mix. There are numerous concerns about the effect on hummingbirds. This is reason enough to not buy this product. Buy a product without the dye.
Better yet, just buy sugar. Use 4 parts water and 1 part sugar. Boil the water first and then add the sugar until dissolved. You will save money and perhaps a hummingbird's life doing this versus buying dye tainted food. Hummingbird food is only sugar with coloring.
CAUTION. DO NOT use artificial sweeteners or honey, use only sugar. Honey and sugar substitutes will malnourish and quickly kill hummingbirds. Sugar Only!

Perky Pet #234 2LB Original Nectar Review

Perky Pet #234 2LB Original Nectar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Why is this stuff "junk food"? Not because it's 99% sugar - that's what hummingbirds drink real flower nectar for. It's because this product, like so much human junk food, is laced with unnatural, unnecessary, and potentially hazardous chemicals. The description brags that it doesn't contain any artificial sweeteners (duh!), but if this really is the original Perky Pet formula it does contain the food coloring Red #40. This synthetic coal-tar dye is the single most popular food coloring in the world, but it's actually banned in some countries over concerns about its safety. From a health standpoint it's important to remember that a hummingbird may drink more than *three times its weight* in nectar or feeder solutions each day. Even a relatively harmless chemical can have damaging effects at such high consumption rates.
Unnecessary additives such as dyes, preservatives, and flavorings are just one reason that hummingbird experts discourage the use of products such as this one. Another is cost. Even the dye-free "instant nectars" contain absolutely nothing to justify a price that's 5 to 8 times higher than that of ordinary white sugar (which is actually sucrose, the natural sugar hummingbirds prefer above all others). A simple solution of 3 to 5 parts water to 1 part white table sugar is convenient, inexpensive, and much more natural for the birds. Remember to clean the feeder and change the solution every 2 to 5 days. For even happier, healthier hummingbirds, plant hummingbird-friendly flowers such as red salvias and columbines and keep your yard pesticide free to provide the tiny insects and spiders that they need for a well-rounded diet.
