(More customer reviews)I purchased the 13 oz. Morning Song Goldfinch Thistle Sock at a local store for a little less than $5. The sock feeder comes with a cord for hanging and is refillable. It should be hung approx. 5' above the ground to feed the birds.
In the past, I've used 2 different styles of hanging tube thistle feeders that have perches. The goldfinches used those feeders too, but the seed always got wet & wouldn't dry out. I hung this sock feeder alongside the tube feeders & was surprised to see that the finches preferred this sock feeder. It's been unseasonably cool in our area this year so I don't know if we'll get more birds when the weather warms up or not. Right now, I usually see 2 goldfinches at a time on the sock feeder. I rarely see any on the tube feeders. We finally found a spot to hang our thistle feeders that will somewhat protect them from the nasty weather. I'm curious to find out how quickly the seed will dry in the sock feeder as compared to the plastic tube feeders. Right now, I'm pleased with my purchase.
Update: I've refilled the sock feeder twice now. The first time I went to way more trouble than necessary to refill the sock. The next time, I used this Heath Outdoor Products FS-1 Feed Scoop-Funnel. I put the sock in a tall, plastic cylinder; pulled the edges of the sock over the top of the cylinder (to hold the sock open) and filled the sock quickly, with no mess. The cylinder helps hold the sock while I'm filling it & also catches the seeds that fall out of the mesh. The seed hasn't gotten moldy in the sock yet like it did in the tube feeders. I read a comment that the sock should be cleaned once in a while, be sure to rinse it well.
