(More customer reviews)It finally got cold enough to try this out. So far, it seems to work very well. Temperatures have been in the 20s and 30s and it keeps a 12" circle of water ice-free. The birds have definitely been taking advantage of it.
It mentions this in the description, but I missed it initially, so I just thought I would reiterate that this heater is thermostatically controlled, so it only turns on when necessary. That's nice, as thermostatic plugs cost twenty bucks or more.
[UPDATE]
My circuit breaker tripped and the birdbath water froze. When I turned it back on, the heater thawed its way out of a solid block of ice at 5 degrees F. I'd say that it works pretty well!

API 300 200-Watt Bird Bath De-Icer Review

(More customer reviews)This de-icer works. No problem with that. It was 9 degrees outside this morning, and the bird-bath was liquid water. There are only two minor issues (and these are truly minor). First, I'm using a concrete birdbath, and it's quite shallow (I don't know if others are deeper). If the de-icer is not completely submerged, it will not work well; only the area immediately around the de-icer will be liquid. The unit is quite thick, and I find that the water evaporates rather quickly...or maybe the birds are very thirsty (!), so I'm topping it off almost every day to keep it covered. The second minor problem is that the electric cord is a bit stiff, and it's not possible to keep the heating elements on the bottom of the birdbath without laying a heavy object (like a rock) on the unit to keep it submerged. The problem is the cord needs to go over the lip or rim of the bird-bath, causing the heating element not to lay flat. But, again, this product does the job and I have alot of happy birds right now.

The item was not contained in any sort of wrapper, carton, or bag to prevent "loss" of pieces/parts should it do so during shipping/handling (which it did!) I had to "sift" through the packaging materials to find the pieces inorder to re-assemble the product. Since there was no paperwork showing how the parts should be configured (assembly-disassembly directions) I had to guess how things went together. I contacted the seller as recommended by Amazon and received NO RESPONSE WHAT-SO-EVER.........
