(More customer reviews)The weather shield is very attractive with its brushed copper material and overlapping leaf design. They look like oak leaves to me, but I'm no arborist. On the Woodlink site the dimensions for this shield are listed as 18" diameter by 5" height. Eighteen inches is a very generous measurement. Because of the leaf design of the shield the outer edge is irregular, but even at its widest point 17.5 inches would be closer to reality. Measuring from the recessed areas of the edge, I found the diameter to be only 14 inches.
A separate hanging hook is packaged in a plastic bag along with a card containing hanging directions. Be sure to keep these directions in safe place so as not to lose them.
I still like this weather shield and don't regret its purchase. However, it sure looked a lot bigger in Ace than it does above the bird feeder. Birds at the top of the elongated feeder do get some protection from the rain and/or snow. Birds feeding at the bottom aren't afforded as much protection, although the shield does afford them a little bit of protection in that exposed position.
One added benefit of the weather shield is that it serves as a squirrel baffle. The sharp narrow tips of the leaves are formidable obstacles, even for a stubborn squirrel.
Should you buy one of these shields? If money is no object and you're more aesthetic than pragmatic, then by all means indulge your desires. The Woodlink Brushed Copper Birdfeeder Weather Shield offers your bird friends the protection of a small umbrella. If you prefer the protection of a patio umbrella, you'll be disappointed with this weather shield, even if it is quite attractive.
